This time Ludlow’s East Street Elementary school closed the afternoon of Wednesday, Sept. 9, when a staff member was found to have caught the virus.
As children started to go back to school in Massachusetts and Connecticut this month, a handful of schools have had to temporarily halt learning and disinfect the buildings to rid the places of any possible COVID-19 viruses.
Each district seems to have a different approach to the discovery of COVID-19 among the faculty, staff, or students. Whether a school closes largely depends on how well administrators can track the employee’s movements through the building and if the person stayed in a limited area like an office or single classroom.
Two days ago, Somers, Connecticut, on the Massachusetts border, closed a school due to an employee testing positive.
Other communities that have had to close schools for COVID-19 related cleaning include Salem in Massachusetts, and Naugatuck, Manchester, and New Milford, all of Connecticut.
In Monson, educators decided to push back the start of the school year due to COVID-19 concerns.
In Granby, Massachusetts, as well as Glastonbury, Plainville, Newington, and Waterbury, all of Connecticut, staff members were found to have contracted COVID-19, but the districts were able to sanitize the schools without having to close them.
